The Golden One — Circle of Koi is part of an ongoing series exploring flow, repetition and the hypnotic beauty of movement found within the natural world. Inspired by koi carp circling beneath the surface of still water, the composition forms a spiralling current of interconnected forms — suggestive of continuity, transformation and quiet balance.
Each koi has been individually hand-painted, cut and shaped from watercolour paper before being carefully arranged into a swirling circular formation. Layered washes of white, deep black and vibrant orange echo the markings and reflections seen on traditional koi, while metallic detailing introduces moments of light and shimmer across the surface.
At the centre of the composition swims a single luminous golden koi — a symbolic focal point representing individuality, guidance and the quiet strength of standing apart within the collective rhythm of the whole.
The intricate spiral patterns painted across the fish reference both rippling water and the repeating geometries found throughout nature, creating a sense of movement that draws the eye continuously around the piece. Every form is delicately raised from the backing board, allowing shadows to shift and deepen as natural light changes throughout the day.
Balancing contemporary paper relief with decorative craftsmanship, The Golden One — Circle of Koi invites slow observation and reflection. The work combines sculptural layering, intricate pattern and fluid composition to create an artwork that feels simultaneously calm, energetic and meditative.
Created through a meticulous and time-intensive process of painting, cutting, shaping and composition, the piece reflects an ongoing fascination with organic pattern, rhythm and the restorative beauty of nature.
