The Golden One — Circle of Koi continues an ongoing exploration of movement, repetition and the quiet harmony found within natural forms. Inspired by the flowing motion of koi carp gliding through water, the composition forms a spiralling circle — suggestive of currents, balance, unity and continual transformation.
Each koi has been individually hand-cut from painted and patterned watercolour paper created using layered acrylics, textured rollers and metallic pigments. Intricate markings ripple across the surface of every form, echoing the scales, reflections and shifting light seen beneath moving water.
Cool tones of turquoise, aqua, teal and deep ocean blue flow throughout the piece, creating a calm and meditative atmosphere, while a single golden koi rests quietly at the centre of the spiral — a subtle focal point symbolising individuality, guidance and stillness within motion.
Every fish is carefully shaped and raised from the backing board to create depth, shadow and a sculptural sense of movement. As light changes across the day, the work continually evolves, with metallic surfaces softly catching the light and delicate shadows enhancing the rhythm of the composition.
