Go Your Own Way — Shoal of Koi explores individuality within collective movement, inspired by the flowing rhythm of fish swimming together in shifting currents. Arranged in a dynamic shoal formation, the koi move across the surface with a sense of calm energy and direction, creating an artwork that feels both meditative and alive.

Hand-painted in layered tones of cobalt, ultramarine, aqua and soft silver-blue, each koi carries intricate spiralling markings inspired by rippling water, natural pattern and the reflective shimmer of scales beneath light. Metallic detailing catches and refracts illumination across the raised surfaces, allowing the composition to subtly change throughout the day.

At the heart of the piece is a single golden koi moving against the flow — a quiet symbol of individuality, courage and the importance of following one’s own path while remaining connected to the wider whole.

Each fish has been individually cut, shaped and delicately elevated from the backing board to create depth, movement and sculptural shadow. Angled mounting techniques lift the koi slightly from the surface, giving the impression of motion through water and enhancing the changing interplay between light and form.

Balancing contemporary paper relief with intricate decorative craftsmanship, Go Your Own Way — Shoal of Koi reflects an ongoing fascination with rhythm, repetition and the emotional resonance of organic movement. The piece invites slow observation while celebrating the beauty of difference within harmony.

Created through a meticulous and highly meditative process of painting, shaping and composition, the artwork embodies themes of flow, individuality and quiet transformation.
